1. Outline

Kumamoto University provide tuition exemption for excellent master’s students who wish to enter the doctoral course of Kumamoto University. If the students pass the screening, they will be fully exempted from paying the tuition from the spring semester 2024 to the end of the second year of their master’s course in principle (except students who are repeating the year).

2. Number of students to be supported

2nd-year students of Master’s Course: 6 persons

*1st-year students who eager to enter the doctoral course can be accepted.

3. Eligibility for application.

Master’s students in Kumamoto University as of April 1, 2024 who wish to enter the doctoral course

of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Kumamoto University.

The following students are excluded;

• Students who are taking or are going to take a leave of absence in AY 2024
• Students who have repeated a year by AY 2024
• International students receiving financial aid from the Japanese/foreign government

(government-sponsored international students)

• Students who have ever been punished according to the Kumamoto University’s rules.

5．Application Procedures

 (1) Application Documents

Please obtain a permission from your supervisor, then submit the following:

 1) Application Form

2) Research Plan

3) Academic Achievements

4) Recommendation Letter from Supervisor

(2) Notice

1) If the documents above are incomplete, the application may not be accepted.

2) Revision of the content of the application documents are not acceptable once they are accepted.

3) Submitted application documents will not be returned once they are accepted.

4) Any misrepresentation of facts in the submitted documents will justify the denial or cancellation of the successful result even after the student passes the screening.

6．Selection Procedure

The documentary selection will be made in the Student Committee Meeting of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences and resolved in the Faculty Meeting of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences.

The candidates nominated by the Graduate School of Medical Sciences will be recommended to the Student Committee of Kumamoto University, and the Committee will select successful applicants among the candidates.

7．Notification of Results

Applicants will be individually notified of the selection results in late September, 2024.

If successful applicants have already paid the tuition for AY2024, the paid tuition will be refunded.

8．After Selected

1) 2nd-year students will be fully exempted from paying tuition for AY 2024.

2) 1st-year students will be fully exempted from paying tuition for AY 2024; Before advancing to the 2nd year, they will be re-examined for tuition payment exemption for AY 2025.

9．Others

1) If successful applicants have already gotten a tuition exemption for AY 2024 in the General Selection, this tuition exemption system (Excellent Master’s Students Selection) will be applied preferentially.

(i.e.) If a student is accepted for both the General Selection for half tuition exemption and the Excellent Master’s Students Selection for full tuition exemption, the result of the General Selection will be canceled.

2) The notification of the results for the Excellent Master’s Students Selection will be notified in late September, and the payment deadline of the tuition for spring semester AY 2024 is September 30, 2024. If you do not get any exemption and miss the payment deadline (September 30, 2024), your student status will be revoked. Please make sure to pay or prepare the tuition in advance, if you have not applied for the tuition payment exemption of the General Selection or have not been accepted in the General Selection.
