当講座では、我が国における後天失明原因の第一位である緑内障の病態解明や、新しい治療方法の開発に、基礎研究および臨床研究の両面から取り組んでいます。具体的には、1) 眼圧が上昇するメカニズムを解明することで新たな眼圧下降薬やドラッグデリバリーの方法を探索すること、2) 緑内障手術成績に対する危険因子を解析し高い効果と安全性を有する手術手技および補助薬剤を研究すること、3) 緑内障視神経障害に応答する神経保護機構に基づく治療方法を開発することを目指しています。また、ハンセン病や家族性アミロイドポリニューロパチーに関連した眼合併症の治療にも取り組んでいます。

In our department, we are working on both basic research and clinical research to elucidate the pathology of glaucoma, which is the leading cause of acquired blindness in Japan, and to develop new treatment methods. Specifically, we are aiming 1) to search for new intraocular pressure-lowering drugs and drug delivery methods by elucidating the mechanism by which intraocular pressure rises, 2) to analyze risk factors for glaucoma surgery results and to research surgical techniques and adjuvant drugs with high efficacy and safety, 3) to develop therapeutic methods based on neuroprotective mechanisms that respond to glaucoma optic neuropathy. We also work on the treatment of ocular complications associated with leprosy and familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy.
